1. TODAY IN GINNY!

A young leading man, a writer, and one of my favorite no-name character actors TODAY IN GINNY!

Actress Mabel Colcard (1873) is credited with being a woman getting a massage in THE WOMEN (1939). Her roles were mainly uncredited in her 30+ film career, but she did have a few credited roles including Hannah in LITTLE WOMEN and Mrs. Flaherty in THE GREAT O'MALLEY, She also played uncredited roles in some pretty good films such as KEEPER OF THE FLAME, THE SHOP AROUND THE CORNER, and HOLIDAY. Colcord had also been in several Broadway productions in featured roles in the two decades prior to her appearance in films.

Screenwriter Aurania Rouverol ((1886) created the Hardy family in her play SKIDDING. Prior to creating America’s favorite family, Rouverol wrote the less than family oriented pre-code film DANCE, FOOLS, DANCE which starred Joan Crawford. Her daughter, Jean, was a successful young actress in films and radio, and a writer who found herself blacklisted in the 1950s. Jean is still alive at age 97. The Hardys plus Jake Holt stand in for Ms. Rouverol.

Now for one of my personal favorites. Actor Dave Willock (1909) studied drama at the University of Wisconsin then formed a vaudeville act with actor and lifelong friend Jack Carson. When Jack got the call to go to Hollywood Dave went as well, making a solid career for himself in uncredited character roles. He also served as the second banana on radio’s THE JACK CARSON SHOW.  In later years, Dave appeared in many Sci-fi features, became a regular member in Jerry Lewis films, and served as narrator for Hanna-Barbera’s WACKY RACES. I first saw him as ex-vaudevillian Charlie Feeney in an episode of DRAGNET. He has a star on the Walk of Fame. Dave was in two Ginnyfilms and I’ve taken the liberty of showing him in both roles. He was a soda jerk, exasperated by the antics of Ginny’s Harriett and her friend Milton in THIS TIME FOR KEEPS (1942) and played the milkman in THE AFFAIRS OF MARTHA (1942), a role in which the writers used him walking his route as an effective way to introduce us to the neighborhood families.

Actor John Beal played Laddie in LADDIE (1935), the film that really started getting Virginia noticed in reviews. She played Little Sister in the film. He never reached stardom, but still had a solid and long career. He played the doctor in MY SIX CONVICTS and was Charles Francis Adams on THE ADAMS CHRONICLES. His final role was in THE FIRM (1993). He’s seen here with his other girl in LADDIE, Gloria Stuart.

Actress June Brewster (1913 or 1909) has a strange IMDb biography. It tell us who she isn’t-one of the Brewster Twins-but nothing about who she is. She played a comedic character named June in a series of shorts with Carol Tevis and Grady Sutton, at least three of which were directed by George Stevens. Near the end of her career she played chorus girl Betty Bartholomew in LOVE IS A HEADACHE (1938). According to threestooges.net, she married a former L.A. policeman who was a suspected criminal, moved with him to Las Vegas where he became involved with the gambling industry. She died there in 1995.
