1. TODAY IN GINNY! (September 5 Edition)

There are four birthdays of TIGers to list for Thursday.

Actor Harold Entwistle (1865) played a court clerk in MAID OF SALEM (1937) and had an undetermined role in TROUBLE FOR TWO (1936).  He started in 1914 at age 49 and appears to have always been a character guy. IMDb shows a gap lasting the entire 1920s, which may be accurate, maybe not. He appears to have also had small roles in ANNE OF WINDY POPLARS, THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER, and WUTHERING HEIGHTS. The photo is Entwistle as Larabee in SALOMY JANE, his very first film.

Marjorie Wood (1882) was in THE WOMEN (1939) playing a character rather rudely listed as Sadie-the Old Maid in the powder room. She was the powder room attendant (that’s better). She played a long list of “Mrs.” roles, so this one isn’t so bad. She worked right up to her year of death, 1955. The photo is of Wood and Shearer in THE WOMEN

Henry Mowbray (1882) played what IMDb calls Bus Man in SOULS AT SEA (1938). Mowbray had a long Broadway career, appearing in THE LAST OF MRS. CHEYNEY, a revival of THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR (featuring TIGer Henrietta Crosman and Will Geer), and JOHNNY BELINDA. In Hollywood, his biggest roles were probably in MURDER BY TELEVISION and THE LEATHERNECKS HAVE LANDED. I found no photo, which is always a great excuse to sneak in one of Ginny, this time with several musical ship passengers in SaS.

Fred Purner (1888) was a movie publicist for a time and did the publicity on an OUR GANG short Ginny’s brother were in, THE PINCH SINGER. Amazingly, someone is selling a photo of him on Ebay. If you really need to see him, you can look him up there.

Jack Hively (1910) was the editor of THE GREAT MAN VOTES (1939) and the director of THE SPELLBINDER (1939). So he’s the guy who left Barrymore’s Weidler toss on the cutting room floor. He edited one movie featuring The Saint and directed three others. He directed ANNE OF WINDY POPLARS in which Harold Entwistle appeared. He also directed the 1940 remake of LADDIE with Joan Carroll in Virginia’s role. Here he is with Gloria Swanson on the set of FATHER TAKES A WIFE.
