1. TODAY IN GINNY!

First up is actress Alma Kruger (1871). Alma is probably best remembered as Head Nurse Molly Byrd in MGM’s Dr. Kildare and Dr. Gillespie series. She didn’t make her first film until age 64, but was in top notch films from the very first, THESE THREE to the last, FOREVER AMBER. In between she appeared in HIS GIRL FRIDAY, SABOTEUR, and ONE HUNDRED MEN AND A GIRL. She played Aunt Bertha in MOTHER CAREY’S CHICKENS (1938). The photo from HIS GIRL FRIDAY is almost a TIGer convention featuring Cary Grant, Frank Jenks, Roscoe Karns, Gene Lockhart, Pat Flaherty, Porter Hall, Alma  & Rosalind Russell. All but Flaherty worked in films featuring our girl.

Gladys George (1900) had the lead in Virginia’s first outing for MGM after she left Paramount, LOVE IS A HEADACHE (1938). In the film, actress Carlotta Lee adopts an orphaned brother and sister, Mickey Rooney and Ginny, to get publicity and save her failing career. Franchot Tone is the newspaper critic who gets involved. Mickey and Ginny steal the film and Gladys begins to move from leads into character roles, the most famous being Ida Archer in THE MALTESE FALCON. She was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar in 1936 for VALIANT IS THE WORD FOR CARRIE. She’s seen here with her two adopted little scamps.

Claudette Colbert (1905) was already a huge star by the time she worked with Virginia in MAID OF SALEM (1937). She was, by all accounts, a very gracious star on the set and treated Virginia and Bonita Granville quite well. Barbara Clarke in MOS was a meaty role for Colbert, but isn’t remembered as much as her roles in films such as IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT, SINCE YOU WENT AWAY, and THE PALM BEACH STORY.

Paul Parry (1908) spent a decade in uncredited roles. While the photo below shows him in western garb, I see no indication in the IMDb record that he appeared in westerns. Toward the end of his career, he performed in a lot of war movies. He was a reporter in BORN TO SING (1942).
