1. TODAY IN GINNY!

This is for Sunday, September 22 and I expect it will actually post slightly after Monday begins.

Actress Kathryn Sheldon (1879) played Mrs. Sullivan in GOLD RUSH MAISIE (1940), a film that will be back on TCM in November. She also played Mrs. Deborah Cheeves in MAID OF SALEM (1937). She had a nice little career of of 100 roles, mostly uncredited, but you may have noticed her as the old woman kneading bread outside of Moses’ house in THE TEN COMMANDMENTS. That was also her final role. I almost credited her with three  films with Ginny for she was in the film SCANDAL SHEET which came out the year after SCANDAL STREET and always gets me confused. The photo is of Mrs. Sullivan and her sons ( Victor Kilian Jr. and Wallace Reid Jr.) learning their gold claims are worthless in GRM.

Peter Meremblum (1890) was a man who cared about music and spreading the love of it to youth. He founded the Peter Meremblum Youth Orchestras which still exist in California more than ¾ of a century later. He also trained the Children’s Orchestra used in BORN TO SING (1942).

Charles Levin (1890) was the laboratory supervisor who worked on all the OUR GANG comedies of the Weidler Brothers era. His earliest credit was on THE FLOORWALKER, a 1916 Chaplin short. I found no photo and so here the title card to one of his films.

Hugh Wynn (1897) wasn’t named that by his parents, he actually chose it for himself. He was a Hollywood film editor and one of those was the Loy-Brent film Ginny appeared in, STAMBOUL QUEST (1934). He worked on some good ones, THE CHAMP, THE PATSY, THE CROWD, THE BIG PARADE. A photo of Loy and Brent stands in.

Katharine Alexander (1898) Miss Billow in THE GREAT MAN VOTES (1939). She was considered one of the most competent of the character actresses of her era and often played society ladies, wives, and mothers. Other roles included Miss Trask in NOW, VOYAGER and Mrs. Steed in THE HUMAN COMEDY. While maintaining her Hollywood presence, she also appeared in several high profile stage productions, including the London edition of DEATH OF A SALESMAN opposite Paul Muni.

Dorothy White (1911) appeared in two Weidlers, playing a nurse in MEN WITH WINGS (1938) and an undetermined bit role in the aforementioned SCANDAL STREET (1938). White was pretty much a chorus girl throughout her career and was a Goldwyn Girl, a Gold Digger, and an Earl Carroll Girl at various times in the early 1930s. The photo is of the Goldwyns as they lined up in 1933 and so maybe the 22 year old Dorothy was still with them.

Arranger LeRoy Holmes (1913) was on staff at MGM in the early 1940s and one of his assignments was BEST FOOT FORWARD (1943). He later spent many years at United Artists, producing his own recordings as well as those of notable acts such as Connie Francis and Shirley Bassey.
